Free Knit or Crochet Mini Stocking Pattern for Christmas Bauble Recipients 2020

Both these patterns use about 8g of sock yarn, so you should be able to make two mini decorations for your tree or mantelpiece using the hand dyed yarn in your FHY Christmas 2020 Bauble.

Knitted Mini Stocking

You will need two colours of sock weight yarn, a set of 3.25mm double pointed needles, a stitch marker and a large tapestry needle for sewing in ends. 1 crochet hook 3mm.

I used Blackberry Stellina for Yarn A and Red Candycane as Yarn B.

Techniques used: Knitting in the round, knitting with double pointed needles, short rows, simple decreases, long tail cast on, 3 needle cast off.

To start cast on 24 stitches (8 on each of 3 needles) in Yarn A. I used the long tail method but you can use any method you are comfortable with. Join the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Use your 'Bella' cat stitch marker to mark the start and end of the round.

Round 2: Yarn B. Knit to end.
Round 3: Yarn A. Knit to end.

Round 1: we will reduce by 4 stitches every round to shape the toe. You may want to divide the stitches between 2 dpn's (12 on each). In yarn A, *knit 1, slip slip knit, knit  6, knit 2 together, knit 1*. Repeat from * to * once more. End of round.
Round 2: *knit 1, slip slip knit, knit 4, knit 2 together, knit 1*. Repeat from * to * once more.
Round 3: *knit 1, slip slip knit, knit 2, knit 2 together, knit 1*. Repeat from * to * once more.
Round 4: *knit 1, slip slip knit, knit 2 together, knit 1*. Repeat from * to * once more.

Finishing
You now have 8 stitches left. You should be able to pull the sock through the small opening in the 8 stitches to turn the sock inside out. This will be a 3 needle cast off. Hold the 2 dpn's with 4 stitches each together in your left hand. Cast off by knitting 2 stitches together (one from each needle held in your left hand.). Knit the next 2 stitches together (one from each needle) so that you have 2 stitches on the needle in your right hand. Pass the 1st stitch over the 2nd stitch, dropping it off the needle. You now have 1 stitch on your right needle. Knit the next 2 stitches from the parallel needles held in your left hand. Pass the previous stitch over the one you have just made and drop it off the left needle. Repeat this again with the last 2 stitches on the two needles held in your left hand. Pass the stitch over and drop it. This leaves 1 stitch on your right needle. Cut the yarn and pass the end through the last stitch to secure it, and use the tapestry needle to weave in the end to secure it.

Secure all other ends by sewing them into the inside of the mini stocking.

For the hanging tab, take a 30cm piece of yarn (or 30cm of both yarns held together) and use the crochet hook to make a small chain of 12 (or longer if you prefer), pass the end of the yarn through the last chain to secure it. Press your sock flat (with your hand). Thread both ends on to the tapestry needle and sew the hanging tab on to the inside of the mini stocking at the inside back of the leg near the bottom of the cuff so that it lines up with the heel. Trim any excess tails to tidy the inside of your mini stocking.

Turn your sock right side out again.

It will not need blocking, so is ready to hang up on your tree!

Crochet Pattern

You will need two colours of sock weight yarn, 1 3mm crochet hook, a stitch marker and a large tapestry needle for sewing in ends.

I used Blackberry Stellina for Yarn A and Red Candycane as Yarn B.

Techniques used: double crochet, crochet 2 together, treble crochet.

To start, chain 20 in yarn A (I used blackberry stellina). Join chain with a slip stitch, being careful notto twist the stitches.

This pattern uses UK crochet terms.

Cuff
Chain 3 (counts as 1st treble). Treble 19 in to each of the starter chains. Secure with a slip stitch.

Leg
Round 1: change to yarn B (I used red candycane) without cutting yarn A. Chain 2 (counts as 1st dc), dc 19. Secure with a slip stitch into top of 2 chains at start.
Round 2: change to yarn A without cutting yarn B. Chain 2 (counts as 1st dc), dc19, Secure with a slip stitch into top of 2 chains at start.
Remaining rounds; repeat round 1 & 2, alternating colours until you have a total of 13 rounds or 6cm from the cuff, ending with yarn B. Do not cut yarn.

Heel
Row 1: In yarn A, Chain 2 then 1dc into same stitch, 9dc. Turn.
Row 2: chain 2, skip 1 stitch, 8 dc. Turn.
Row 3: chain 2, skip 1 stitch, 6dc. Turn.
Row 4: chain 2, skip 1 stitch, 4dc. cut yarn and secure by threading tail through last loop.

Foot
Round 1: continuing in yarn A. Attach yarn A to original start of round position where you left the yarn B thread. Chain 2 and crochet 19 dc, one complete round. secure with a slip stitch into 2nd chain.
Round 2: in yarn B, chain 2 (counts as 1st dc) dc 19, secure with slip st.
Round 3: in yarn A, chain 2 9counts as 1st dc) dc 19, secure with slip st.
Rounds 4-12: repeat rounds 2 & 3 in alternating colours for a further 10 rows or 4.5cm, ending with yarn B. Cut yarn B.

Toe
Round 1: In yarn A, reducing stitches for the toe starts here. *Dc 2 together, dc 3* repeat from * to * 3 times. Secure end of round with slip stitch. If you are unfamiliar with double crocheting 2 stitches together, you insert your hook into the first stitch as normal, but instead of pulling the yarn back through to complete the dc, you insert the hook in the normal fashion through the second stitch and draw the yarn through both stitches, turning 2 stitches into one.
Round 2: *dc 2 together, dc2*. Repeat from * to * 3 times. Slip stitch to secure.
Round 3: *dc 2 together, dc1*. repeat from * to * 3 times. Slip stitch end of round.
Round 4: *dc 2 together* repeat from * to * 3 times. Cut end of yarn and using the tapestry needle, sew through the last 4 stitches and gather together to close hole. Turn sock inside out and secure the end by weaving it through the back of the stitches.

Secure all other yarn tails by sewing into back of stitches, trim any leftover yarn to tidy.

Hanging Tab
