Free Crochet Pattern - Bella's Beautiful Bumblebee Blanket

This blanket was intended for me, as a lap blanket, but as with all things in this house, the cat has claimed it as her own.

Its a very simple pattern made to show off the beautiful colours in hand dyed yarns. The colours reminded me of bumblebees covered in pollen popping in and out of flowers in the Payers Pocket Community Garden, hence the name.

Note: the bare bones of this pattern is similar to Attic 24's Granny Stripe Blanket, and she's much better at explaining things than me, so if you are a crochet beginner her blog is well worth checking out! This post will literally be a recipe for the colours I used and the order to put them in if you would like a similar colour combination.

Recipe:

The size is around 90cm x 90cm, so purchase more yarn if you wish to make a bigger blanket.

You will need:

3mm crochet hook.
1x skein each of  Hedgehog Fibres Merino DK in Beetle, Fool's Gold, Sorbet, Beach Bunny 115g.
1x skein of Little Mouse House DK Desire in Spicy Pumpkin Latte 100g.
1x skein of Viking Hand Dyed Yarns Super Merino DK in Essence (50g used).Remnants (20-40g approx) of other yarns including Folkestone Harbour Yarn Merino DK in Lilac and Isabelline, FHY Merino DK Autumn colours sample, Hedgehog Fibres Merino DK in Spell.

To Start:

In colourway Beetle chain 152 stitches.(multiple of 3 plus extra 2).
Next row start in the 2nd chain from the hook and work 1dc in each chain until the end.

Still in Beetle chain 3 (counts as 1 treble) then 1 treble in to stitch at base of chain, skip 2 stitches and work 3 trebles in the next stitch, skip 2 and work 3 trebles in next stitch, and so on until the last space where you work 2 trebles only. We'll call this row A. Cut yarn and change to Fool's Gold. I made a small knot and wove the ends in afterwards.

Fool's Gold: chain 3 (counts as 1 treble), in next space (ie between clusters of trebles formed by previous row) work 3 trebles, and so on until the end where you work 1 treble on top of the 2 trebles from the previous row. We'll call this row B.

These 2 rows are the basis of a granny crochet blanket, so repeat row A & B all the way until the end changing the yarn colour for each row.

Next row use Beach Bunny, followed by Sorbet, followed by Spicy Pumpkin Latte, Essence, Beetle, Fool's Gold, Sorbet, Beach Bunny and Spicy Pumpkin Latte.

Repeat this 11 row colour combination until you have 96 rows or the blanket is roughly square.

Yarn Colour Order:

  1. Beetle
  2. Fool's Gold
  3. Sorbet
  4. Beach Bunny
  5. Pumpkin Spiced Latte
  6. Essence
  7. Beetle
  8. Fool's Gold
  9. Sorbet
  10. Beach Bunny
  11. Pumpkin Spiced Latte

Edging:

For the edging, I started in FHY Lilac, working 3 trebles in each space along the top edge, making a corner by working 3 trebles, chain 3, 3 trebles into the same space, then working 3 trebles into every other row down the side and continuing in this fashion for all edges until the end of the round.

Next round is worked in the FHY Autumn colours sample, with 1 dc in every stitch, except the corners which are 1 dc, ch 2, 1dc in the corner space before continuing round.

Next round in FHY Isabelline, 1 dc in every stitch as per the last row.

Then in Hedgehog Fibres Spell, I worked a long dc (going into the bottom of the stitch instead of the top to create a long stitch) then chained 1 whilst missing a stitch, so that you end up with alternate long dc's and chains in a pattern that resembles a sewn blanket edging. In the corners, long dc into the corner space formed by the Autumn colours, chain 2, another long dc into the same space, before continuing the round.

The very last round is in the Autumn colours sample, worked in half trebles all the way, with half treble, chain 3, half treble in the corner space.

And that is the recipe for this blanket! I hope you enjoy it as much as Bella does (and I will when one day I rescue it from under her furry little behind.
